13 Intriguing New Summer Anime

Summer seems intent on spoiling me with new shows in all my favorite genres. Let’s take a look at the various shows that have grabbed my interest.

There are way too many interesting anime releasing during the summer season for me to hope to cover them all. And these are just the new ones! So for my future benefit, and that of anyone looking to see some of the new shows that are going to be releasing in July, here is a collection of thirteen new anime that have succeeded in sparking my interest, along with their trailers.

13: Hotel Inhumans
Releasing Sunday July 6th on Crunchyroll

A hotel with a peculiar, and deadly clientele. Because the people who visit this place are assassins, and they want more than just fluffy pillows and a good thread count on the sheets. This grabbed my interest because of the way something similar was used in John Wick. I don’t know how much they’ll end up having in common, but that was enough to make it stand out. A bit outside my wheelhouse, and probably not something I’m going to dive deep into during such a busy anime season, but still worth mentioning here.

12: Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter
Releasing Saturday June 28th on Crunchyroll

This anime, about a man tasked with tutoring a noble girl in the arts of magic, instantly made me think of the opening to Cyrus’ storyline in the game Octopath Traveler. With Cyrus being my favorite character in that game, and this trailer overlook looking interesting in a cozy school setting kind of way, my interest was piqued. It fails to go higher since it is listed as a harem show and those–regardless of if it’s men or women–can be hit or miss for me. Still something I might give a go on a whim.

11: The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity
Releasing Sunday July 6th on Netflix

I have so many mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, it’s being done by Clover Works, which means it’s going to look gorgeous. And its premise of a wealthy girl and a lower class guy is a trope I can appreciate. But the drama about which schools they go to seems silly from my (western?) perspective, and depending on how much of the plot’s energy comes from that it might drive me up the wall. Probably something I’ll binge once it’s finished. Likely not the kinda show that needs deep, weekly discussion.

10. Dekin no Mogura: The Earthbound Mole
Releasing Monday July 7th on Crunchyroll

Banished from the afterlife, oh my! The only reason this isn’t higher is because I’m not 100% sure, even after reading the summary and watching a trailer, just exactly what I’m getting into here. It seems that our protagonist, Mogura, traps spirits of some form in a lantern. But why has he been banished from the afterlife? Does he want to change that? And what, if so, is he doing about it? These are the questions I have for now. They may, or may not, end up being the right questions. Despite its place on this list, The Earthbound Mole is likely one of the series I actually will be covering due to its scheduling. Provided it passes the three episode test, of course.

09: Clevatess
Releasing Wednesday July 2nd on Crunchyroll

A dragon, a resurrected hero, and…a baby? This seems like a rather unique tale, and I have heard some good things about the writing in some videos others have made about what they are planning to watch. That said, I’m a bit fuzzy on some of the details of the premise here, and I’m not fully sold on the art style. It seems a bit…dingey? This is one I will likely check out, and possibly add if I find it really, really good after watching the first (hour long!) episode. But it’s with two other shows on Wednesday, and as such might get slotted into my empty Thursday spot. We shall see.

08: New Saga
Releasing Wednesday July 2nd on Crunchyroll

It is not enough to slay a demon lord. There has to be a legitimate “why”. That is the starting point for New Saga, where our hero, Kyle, has won the day, but lost everyone he loves. Lucky for him that he ends up getting ahold of a stone that can send him back in time, giving him the chance to get things right this time. I’ve heard people talking about this like it’s the anime version of getting to play your favorite video game on New Game+. I’m a sucker for time travel narratives. And the art style in these previews looks promising. On the downside, I did hear that this may have had some production issues. I suppose only time will tell. For now, I am intrigued.

07: Onmyo Kaiten: Re:Birth Verse
Releasing Wednesday July 2nd on Crunchyroll

Another tale of time traveling in order to prevent tragedy, but in this case it seems there is going to be more of a focus on getting stronger, rather than utilizing strategy. On the plus side for this MC, he’s primarily trying to save one girl. Not his parents, friends, loved one, etc. Still, the art style looks cool and this guy’s determination to keep going, no matter what, is the kind of block headed anime spunk that I look for in these kinda shows from a male lead. Given that we have two series dealing with time manipulation of some sort, it will be interesting to see how they differ.

06: Betrothed To My Sister’s Ex
Releasing Friday July 4th on Crunchyroll

Ah yes, my seasonal fantasy shoujo pick. I always want to love these. I almost always end up hating them. I’ll never fully understand why that is. But I’ll keep adding at least one, provided its premise is strong enough. Because while I find a lot of dudes, it’s only by risking the dudes that you can find the gems. In this case, the fact that we don’t have an outright villain story is an instant plus. It’s not that I hate villains, but rather that they’ve been overdone in this style. On the downside, our heroine seems like an absolute doormat. I don’t want a girlboss, but for a character to have absolutely no preferences? They’re gonna have to work hard to sell that to me, and they’re not gonna wanna keep it that way for long.

05: The Summer Hikaru Died
Releasing Saturday July 5th on Netflix

There’s something…different…about Hikaru. And I love the fact that, going in, I have no idea exactly what that is. I’ve been waiting for this show to come out. I’m a big fan of psychological horror, especially when it ties into inter-personal relationships. And this looks like it should be right up my street. It’s not higher because there is always a risk, with something like this, that the pacing may be too fast or too slow. Or that the eventual reveal, and the consequences of what’s going on, won’t have enough payoff. But I’m looking forward to tuning in and seeing what will happen.

04: Secret of the Silent Witch
Releasing Friday July 4th on Crunchyroll

An extremely powerful witch must go undercover at an academy to protect the second prince of her kingdom. Too bad her social anxiety makes talking to other people so much harder than casting spells. To the point where she’s specialized in being able to cast without speaking. Socially awkward MCs are always something that draws me in, and that’s no exception here. I also like the fact that it looks like we’re going to get a solid female friendship. And the inverted bodyguard trope, where a woman is protecting a man. Without this devolving into some snarky girlboss garbage. The characters here look to have heart. We’ll see if I’m right when this starts next week.

03: Lord of the Mysteries
Releasing Saturday July 28th on Crunchyroll

Steampunk, Lovecraftian entities, tarot cards and a Victorian alternate world setting are blending together in a potion I’m more than willing to drink–consequences be damned. I may not have heard of Lord of the Mysteries until I sat down this week to decide what I wanted to watch for the summer, but oh boy has it raced up the list and found a secure spot at number 3. The art style here is gorgeous, the action looks solid, the premise and its rich world building potential have my brain firing on all cylinders, and it starts this Saturday, meaning it’ll be what kicks off the summer season for me. I can’t wait!

02: Tougen Anki
Releasing July 11th (awaiting platform info)

I’ve been on a bit of an Oni kick since 2025 started. First when designing a character for a story project I’m working on. Then in choosing to romance Kai in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma. And most recently as Tougen Anki and Gachiakuta battled it out for the number one spot on my most anticipated list. While Gachiakuta claimed victory, Tougen Anki is no slouch. It has Oni, it has interesting looking fights. It has a school setting (always been a fan of those, despite them being common) and it has a main character with an attitude. As a fan of characters like Yosuke from Yu Yu Hakusho or Sakura from Wind Breaker, a character who can be a bit more rough around the edges is right up my street. And will fit well in a story where we are going to follow things from the Oni point of view.

01: Gachiakuta
Releasing Sunday July 6th on Crunchyroll

Anyone who was following my YouTube channel last summer, when I covered Failure Frame, knows I’m a sucker for a well written revenge story with interesting characters. And that definitely looks like what we’re getting here. The theme of throwing away vs. using ‘garbage’, whether we’re talking about things or people, seems to start in the art style of this show, and then runs right down to its very core, touching every element of the story along the way. Someone being punished for a crime they did not commit is already something that’s going to tick me off. An entire society that views people as disposable is only going to make that rage burn hotter. I’m eager to see what Rudo, this show’s main character, will do about that.

Anyway, those are the shows that have grabbed my interest for summer 2025 anime season. Is there anything here that you are looking forward to, too? Is there anything coming out that’s new that you think I’ve missed? I’d love to know, so feel free to share your thoughts.
