Plot (Summary from Crunchyroll)
After Allen failed the court sorcerer exam, he couldn’t return home even if he wanted to. While searching for a job, an unexpected offer comes his way to be the private tutor of the duke’s daughter. This anime, about a man tasked with tutoring a noble girl in the arts of magic, instantly made me think of the opening to Cyrus’ storyline in the game Octopath Traveler. With Cyrus being my favorite character in that game, and this trailer overlook looking interesting in a cozy school setting kind of way, my interest was piqued. It fails to go higher since it is listed as a harem show and those–regardless of if it’s men or women–can be hit or miss for me. Still something I might give a go on a whim.
I like the art style here, especially the character designs. The use of color is very warm and inviting, and the mix between a more normal and proportioned set of character designs, with other moments that have adorable chibi proportions, works well. The facial expressions can be great, and succeeded in getting a laugh out of me at least twice.
Allen, Tina, and Ellie all seem likeable. Allen’s history of struggling with a limited mana supply will likely make him an excellent candidate to help these girls learn to use spells. Meanwhile, his reputation as a ‘ladies’ man’ is likely going to be played for laughs. Both the fact that things seem to happen to him, and the fact that he seems to want to deny the allegations people are making.

Part of the show is the fact that Tina’s father initially wanted Allen to convince her not to go to the academy. Fortunately, Allen confirmed that the father will let her go. That made me feel better. I was initially kinda annoyed that everyone had set Allen up for this job if they actually didn’t want Tina to learn magic and go to the academy. In that case, be a father and say “NO.”. As a father, “No” is part of the parenting starter page that gets way too little use.
I really enjoyed episode one and it set a fun, whimsical tone, with a few light mysteries lurking underneath, to get this show off on the right foot. If they can keep up this kind of overall atmosphere, I think we’re in for a treat.
